A goal scored by Paul Scholes when United crush MLS team, New York Cosmos in a farewell match which was specially prepared for him after he retired.

Incoming onto the field with his three children, Scholes received applause around 76,000 United fans who crowded stadium.

This match was held at Old Trafford on Friday, United won 6-0. Scholes scored on a trademark shot from 20 yards, Wayne Rooney converted a penalty kick to give a full-strength United a 2-0 lead at halftime.

With a Community Shield match looming against Manchester City on Sunday, United manager Alex Ferguson reshuffled his lineup for the second half. Another four goals scored by Anderson, Danny Welbeck and two goals from Mame Biram Diouf.

Entering the 75th minute, Scholes pulled out by Fergie. Standing ovation was again shown the Red Devils fans along with two guests of honor, Pele and United legend, Eric Cantona, was now New York Cosmos Soccer director.

Recently retired Paul Scholes will enjoy a testimonial game against New York Cosmos at Old Trafford on August 5.

The game will mark the return of Red Devil legend Eric Cantona, who on 25 January 1995 launched a kung-fu style kick into the crowd, directed at Crystal Palace fan Matthew Simmons, followed by a series of punches, now director of football at New York Cosmos, will manage them againts Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Scholes, who will take up a coaching role with United, said: "This is going to be a big night for me and my family but one which I intend to enjoy and I will savour every moment. "The plan was for Eric to come back and overshadow me," laughed Scholes. "Hopefully everyone will be concentrating on him and I can just mosey off somewhere and be out of the way. Seriously, the Cosmos are just getting back together again and it seemed a sensible thing to do."

Cantona said he was looking forward to returning to Manchester to honour Scholes. “I wish to congratulate Paul for such an incredible career at Manchester United and I am looking forward to returning to Old Trafford in my new role with the New York Cosmos,” said Cantona.

United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, meanwhile, is relishing the prospect of seeing Cantona in the opposing dug-out. “Neither of us will want to lose this one, it is sure to be a great night and a well deserved recognition for Paul,” he said.

Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes retired on Tuesday, 31 May 2011, with the 36 year old opting to stay at the Premier League champions in a coaching role rather than extend his playing days.

Scholes, who came through the Red Devil academy as part of the club's famous group of youngsters in the mid-1990s, is widely acknowledged as one of the finest English footballers of his generation.

Scholes made his Manchester United debut in 1994, making 676 appearances, His retirement came after he helped the club win a record 19th league title, the 10th of his career, and his last game was Saturday's Champions League final loss to Barcelona.

United team-mate Rio Ferdinand said on Twitter that Scholes had gone "from a scoring midfielder to a dictator of the game" and "changed his game while still at top of the game".

Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere described Scholes on the same social networking site as "top class" and "a great role model for any young English midfielder".

Scholes was part of Manchester United's Class of 92, which also produced David Beckham, Nicky Butt and Gary Neville, another player who announced his retirement this season.

The club's chief executive, David Gill saying: "It is a very sad day for Manchester United fans around the world. We all know that Paul was one of the players that came through the ranks of the academy system in the 1990's and has established himself as one of the greatest players to ever wear the United shirt".

In addition, Scholes was a member of the team that winner in the 2008 Champions League final against Chelsea but was suspended for the 1999 final win over Bayern Munich.

He also won 66 England caps before retiring from National Team following the Euro 2004 tournament, aged only 29.
