Cristiano Ronaldo ended the season with a won the individual title as the top scorer of La Liga and he becoming the first player to score 40 goals in a single Primera Division season.
Ronaldo contributed two goals as Real Madrid hit Almeria 8-1 at the Santiago Bernabeu on Saturday (05/21/2011).
His double meant he moved two clear of the previous mark, which he jointly held with Real Madrid's Hugo Sanchez and Athletic Bilbao striker Telmo Zarra. Sanchez scored 38 in the 1989/90 season and Zarra's 38 came in 1959/60.
Ronaldo's brace against Almeria was also his 52nd and 53rd goals in all competitions, one more than Barcelona forward Lionel Messi - a record for a player in Spanish football. Both men have played a total of 54 games this season, but Messi will have a chance to equal or overtake CR7's 53-goal haul when he plays his 55th match of the season next Saturday in the Champions League final against Manchester United.
