Peru beat Colombia in extra time to reach into the semifinal

Goals from midfielder Carlos Lobaton and Juan Vargas give the Peruvians an unlikely win on Saturday at Mario Alberto Kempes Stadium in the complementary time after both teams drew goalless in the normal time to send them into the semi finals for the first time in more than ten years.

The Colombians should have taken the lead with a penalty in the 66th minute but striker Radamel Falcao put the ball wide.

Peru's Lobaton snatched a goal from nothing. In the 101st minute, Colombia keeper Luis Martinez spilt the ball when he came out to a free kick from the left by Juan Vargas and it dropped to the 31 year old who rifled the ball in from 18 yards out to give Peru a 1-0 lead.

The result for Peru, who qualified from the group phase as the best third placed team, means they will face Argentina or Uruguay in semi final clash which is to take place on Tuesday. Meanwhile Colombia will return home devastated after crashing out of the tournament.
