Holder Brazil were held 0-0 by Venezuela in their first 2011 Copa America Match



The five-time FIFA World Cup winners were held 0-0 by Venezuela in their first 2011 Copa America Group B match at the Cuidad de la Plata on Sunday (7/3/2011), after being denied a possible penalty and seeing Alexandre Pato hit the crossbar.

The Selecao started the game on top, AC Milan Alexandre Pato had the best chances during the first half, hitting the bar just before the half hour and then forcing a good save from Venezuela goalkeeper Renny Vega.

Referee Raul Orozco waved away shouts for a penalty in the 39th when Venezuela defender Oswaldo Vizcarrondo, sliding just in front of the goal mouth, blocked a shot from Robinho with his shoulder.

In the final attack of the firsthalf Neymar missed a great chance as he fired high from inside the box under no pressure at all.

The second half followed a similar pattern with Brazil mounting a few attacks, always looking for a stunning individual effort to win the match.

Brazil plays its second group match on Saturday against Paraguay, While Venezuela plays Ecuador the same day.
